We believe that the Christian calls to love our global neighbours, care for creation and seek justice in society means that where we store our money - the good gifts given to us by God, via our congregations - should not be used to endorse the further funding of the destruction of the planet.
This is a matter of discipleship, of aligning our financial practice with our faith ethic as a prophetic act against injustice. This is reason itself to act, as we aim to bring our whole lives in line with God’s good will for the world.
We also think this can create real change in the world. We want to see 100 churches switch to green banks and influence others in their areas, denominations and networks to do the same, building a movement across the UK Church that tips the scale of how banks behave.
Through Bank Well and the other campaigns it sits alongside, eventually the smaller, greener banks will grow in size enough to make green banking a more viable option, and the larger established banks will be forced by consumer pressure to clean up their portfolios. Over time this turns off the tap of funding for fossil fuels and redirects money to climate solutions, pulling the biggest lever available to us in the fight against climate change.
Our role is to help you and your church to Bank Well. We support UK churches through the process of switching, connecting this accessible climate action up to the broader work of transforming and redeeming the financial sector.
Whether you want to start advocating for change in your church, or if you’re a leader or treasurer already looking for greener banking options, we'd love you to get involved.
Bank Well began as a project of the Just Love Network in 2023. Inspired by individual bank-switching campaigns like The Switch and institutional divestment campaigns like Bright Now, a small team of volunteers came together around the vision for a campaign focusing on churches’ bank accounts.
Over 18 months, the Bank Well Team have trialled the process of supporting churches to switch while developing a set of internal and external resources around ethical banking for UK churches. This has given us depth of insight into the particular banking needs of churches and obstacles that may arise.
The JustMoney Movement came on board in 2024 to help provide knowledge and expertise from their history of campaigning on ethical banking, particularly from their annual Greener, Fairer Banking Guide for churches. (We really recommend it!).
Bank Well sits within a much broader movement of campaigning with banks in general and faith-based financial campaigning specifically. Our church account switching project combines with high-level direct advocacy with the banks, shareholder engagement, and broader consumer-focused campaigning to address the same problem from different angles.
Bank Well is a project incubated by two fantastic organisations: Just Love UK and the JustMoney Movement. Both are registered Christian charities.
The Just Love Network is a lifelong space of support and action in the work of social justice. Our vision is to cultivate a network of thousands pursuing justice in the way of Jesus, gathered around six Justice Practices and transforming every sphere of society. Sign up here to learn more! If you're a student, you can also check our our university groups and get involved there. Bank Well was incubated by the Just Love Science & Tech Sphere in 2023.
The JustMoney Movement has a vision for a world where money shapes a fairer, greener future. We are building a movement of Christians and churches acting and speaking out for a more just use of money. You can join this movement of individuals and congregations making fairer, greener choices with their own money, and campaigning for changes by banks, businesses, and in the tax system, so that all people and the planet can flourish.
